Spring Cleaning for Your Home’s Exterior: What to Check First

|

If you love spring cleaning, then consider including your home’s exterior in the routine.

Spring is the perfect time to give your home’s exterior a little attention after a long winter. Snow, ice, wind, and debris can all leave behind buildup and minor issues that are easy to miss. While larger repairs should of course be handled by professionals, there are several smaller things homeowners can safely do on their own to maintain their homes.

One of the first things to check for is tree branches growing near or on roof or siding. Winter storms can weaken limbs, and branches that hang too close to your home can rub against shingles or siding during windy conditions. Cutting back branches can help prevent damage and keep debris from collecting on the roof.

Next, take a look at your siding. Over time, dirt, leaves, and weeds can accumulate along the base of the home. Clearing this buildup helps prevent moisture from sitting against the siding, allowing you to spot any visible issues more easily.

It’s also a good idea to clean debris around your gutters and downspouts. While climbing ladders isn’t recommended for those without experience, you can safely remove leaves or sticks that have collected near the bottom of downspouts or around the foundation. This helps to ensure water can drain properly during spring rains.

Another simple task is checking near windows, doors, and trim. You should look for any visible gaps, peeling caulk, and loose trim pieces that may have developed during the winter.

Finally, take a quick walk around your property and do your best to look at your roof from the ground. Look for missing shingles, debris buildup, or anything that looks unusual.

If you notice anything concerning, or if you aren’t sure if something looks right, our team at CR3 American Exteriors can offer a free professional inspection to make sure your home’s exterior is ready for the seasons ahead. A little attention in the spring can go a long way toward protecting your home year-round.
