What Do Granules on Shingles Actually Do?

|

If you read our blogs, you recognize the word 'granules.’ But have you ever wondered what they really are and why they matter? Let’s take a look at what a granule is and why it is important.

A shingle is made up of three main parts: asphalt, a fiberglass mat, and stone granules. Each of these three parts plays an important role in keeping your roof strong and protective. Over time, though, these materials naturally wear down.

Granules form the top layer of a shingle. They are coated in ceramic which is baked on and designed to provide a shield against the sun’s UV rays. When your shingles are new, granules help reflect heat, lower energy usage, and keep your home at a more comfortable temperature. But as granules wear away, their protective power weakens, and this leaves a roof much more vulnerable.

Heavy rain, strong winds, falling branches, blizzards, and especially hail can knock granules loose, making shingles weaker over time. Hail is one of the leading causes of granule loss. If you experience a hail storm, it’s a smart idea to call us for a roof inspection so we can check out how your granules are doing.
