What Happens When Lightning Strikes a House?

|

With all the storms happening across America in recent weeks, many have been seeing lightning flashing across the sky. While it is very unlikely that lightning would actually strike a house, it does happen. So, what would happen if lightning were to strike a home? What would that look like?

There are many parts of a house that would be impacted by a lightning strike. A direct hit could send a power electrical surge through the roof, affecting wiring, plumbing, foundation, and much more. Certain electronics may stop working, and the risk of fire damage is possible as well.

Different roofing materials can have specific reactions to lightning strikes. No roof is immune to lightning, but some may handle it better than others. Let’s take a look:

  • Metal Roofs: Metal is a conductive material, but it would not attract lightning more than other roof types. They actually help to disperse energy safely and are non-combustible. This makes them one of the safer options during a strike.

  • Asphalt Shingles: This is the most common roofing material in the U.S. Lightning strikes to asphalt can result in heat or fire damage. In addition, this could cause an electrical surge or ignite nearby debris.

  • Wood Shingles: This material poses a higher fire risk, especially if the roof is older, or the wood is dry and untreated.

  • Tile or Slate: While resistant to fire, tile or slate are more likely to crack or shatter under the force of a lightning strike, posing a risk to the underlying structure as well.

A lightning strike to a home will often travel through wiring or plumbing, resulting in the possibility of fried electronics, foundational cracks, and even hidden fires in the walls. This is why it is so important to immediately call emergency services for help if you suspect your home has been struck by lightning. Calling an electrician is essential as well. Finally, if the structure of your home— including the roof, siding, etc.— has been affected, please call us right away so we can come and offer a free inspection and help you figure out the next steps.
